Just Colored Your Hair? How to Keep the Color Vibrant for Longer

1. During the first 48–72 hours, don't wash your hair right after coloring. Wait at least 2–3 days so the color can set and the cuticle can seal completely.

2. Choose the right shampoo. Use one made specifically for color-treated hair, and make sure it's sulfate-free, since sulfates are the main culprit that strips color out quickly. If you have an ashy, gray, or balayage tone, keep a purple or color-depositing shampoo on hand and use it 1–2 times a week to maintain the cool tone and cancel out yellow.

3. Control the water temperature. Wash with cool or room-temperature water, because warm water opens the cuticle and lets the color rinse away easily. Cool water helps lock the color in better.

4. Limit heat styling. Blow-dryers, curling irons, and flat irons make color fade faster. If you must use them, always apply a heat-protectant spray first.

5. Protect your hair from the elements. Avoid harsh sunlight, as UV rays damage hair pigment just like they do skin. If you'll be out in the sun for a long time, wear a hat or use a serum with UV protection made for hair.

6. Watch out for chlorine. If you're going to swim, apply a leave-in conditioner before getting in the pool to create a barrier that keeps chlorine from eating away at your color.

7. Nourish with treatments. Color-treated hair tends to be dry and highly porous, so an intensive mask helps keep it looking shiny and healthy.
